Pearls were popular in the 1920s, especially in silent cinema costumes.  Many of the costumes in these photos were designed by Natacha Rambova, wife of Rudolph Valentino.

In 1958, Life Magazine invited Marilyn Monroe and photographer Richard Avedon to recreate images of five celebrated actresses of different eras.  Entitled “Fabled Enchantresses,” the piece was part of the magazine’s December 22 “Christmas” issue and included an article by Marilyn’s playwright husband, Arthur Miller, entitled “My Wife, Marilyn.”

The woman who was the epitomé of the "vamp" persona in cinema history, Theda Bara, was born Theodosia Goodman in Cincinnati, Ohio on July 29th, 1890. Theda Bara's fabricated screen name was an anagram for "Arab death."
